Google has launched the Android Developer Challenge to encourage developers to build great mobile applications for its newly released open-source mobile operating system, Android. The Challenge has a total of $10 million in prizes waiting to be won. The developer’s toolkit (SDK) for Android, which was released by the Open Handset Alliance, will allow developers to create application that will work with Google’s mobile operating system. The resulting applications will then be able to run on any of the handsets recognized by the alliance. According to Google, the award money will be distributed equally between the Android Developer Challenge I and II. Challenge I will be open and accept entries from January 2 through March 3, 2008 where the 50 most promising entries will each receive a $25,000 award by the end of March to fund further development. The 50 most promising entries in Challenge I will then be eligible for even greater recognition by applying by May 1, 2008. Ten top entries will be chosen to receive $275,000 each and another ten entries of $100,000 each. These top entries will be announced by the end of May 2008. In a post to Android Developers Blog, Jason Chen, an Android advocate, said: “We’re really looking forward to seeing all the amazing applications that developers will create on an open mobile phone platform.” Challenge II will launch after the first Android-based handsets become available in the second half of 2008.
